Waves Group dig deep in the Oscar Dragon boat race for Great Ormond Street Hospital
September 20, 2017
Friday 15th September saw our team compete in the OSCAR Dragon Boat race raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
Wearing some subtle outfits, our intrepid team of rowers surpassed expectations (including our own!) and posted the fastest time of 1m20s in the first heat. In the second heat, our team improved on this time to put them at the top of the leader-board and qualify for the final, despite some ‘monsoon’ conditions.
The top six of the twenty four teams battled it out in the final, with the field all very close together in the final stages and a real ‘photo-finish’. With none of the teams knowing who had won, we all had to wait in suspense as the result was announced sometime later!
In the end, we achieved a very creditable 4th place (in boat number 4) with everyone digging deep right to the last stroke to achieve an impressive result (not bad for a first time!). Despite our aching bodies, we were all extremely happy to have raised nearly £4,500 in aid of a fantastic cause and we would like to thank everyone who has donated so generously.
We would like to congratulate Lomar Shipping for winning the final – very well deserved, but we will back to challenge again!
However, most importantly, we would like to congratulate Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, the OSCAR campaign and Phil Parry of Spinnaker Consulting on running such a great event and achieving the fantastic result of over £150,000 donated by the end of the races on the 15th September. It is a very worthy cause and the donations will make a real difference in helping to find cures for childhood diseases.
