Waves Group’s Civil Engineers Aid Sarens in the Upgrade of the Port of HaminaKotka
August 28, 2019
Waves Group consultancy was appointed by Sarens N.V. to provide specialist maritime civil engineering consultancy services for the planning, design verification and supervision of the construction and extensive civil upgrade works needed at the Port of HaminaKotka.
The new transhipment base is capable of receiving large ocean-going module delivery ships and a fleet of bespoke module-carrying vessels and barges. The modules will be transhipped through the base using Ro-Ro technology. The project was an important logistics component within a much larger oil and gas project.
The port upgrade works consisted of an extensive, marine infrastructure development which included; dredging (200,000 m3), reclamation of 4 hectares of land, ground improvement, rock revetment and breakwaters. Marine structures included the construction of two new Ro-Ro berths, a new 125m long suspended deck jetty and mooring dolphin, the strengthening, modification and widening of an existing Ro-Ro berth, new fender systems for all berths and the construction of over 18 hectares of heavy-duty pavements. The Project also included the construction of numerous ancillary works including site offices, barge anchor mooring systems, service connections, washdown areas and maintenance facilities.
The project lasted for three years with the Port welcoming its first ocean-going vessel on July 16, 2018. The construction works were completed and handed over ready for operations on schedule in April 2018, in accordance with the agreed construction budget.
Following the completion of the upgrade, the Port of HaminaKotka have now been able to offer additional space for the storage of modules during the winter period providing greater operational flexibility. The re-development has also significantly benefitted the Port which has seen an increase in port traffic in the first quarter of this year with transport volume hitting a record-high of 16.2 million tonnes, a 10.3% increase.
The appointment of Waves Groups as civil engineers to the project reinforces our standing within the industry where port development, structural design and project management are concerned.
