Waves Group ready to support the offshore wind boom
June 20, 2022
In January this year, approval for approximately 17 projects were announced in the ScotWind Round 1 bid results with almost 60% of the projects being floating offshore wind (15GW). These projects, totalling 25GW of offshore wind power, offers Scotland and the UK a huge opportunity to transform its energy market and move more closely towards a net zero economy. This is what the industry has been calling for, more investment in green energy and further growth opportunities.
In this context, what we require now is a hands-on approach to support all the technical developments required over the coming years to allow all these major projects to materialise in the next decade.
Waves Group has been involved in the renewable energy market for over 15 years, providing engineering and Marine Warranty Surveyors (MWS) services to many projects across the UK, Europe and Asia. Our team of experienced Engineers and Consultants are ready to support your projects from the early bidding phase through to Detailed Engineering and Installation.
We are proud to have supported OWPL during their successful bid application for the West of Orkney windfarm, looking at the offshore logistics for the project, considering the risks and implications of going for a floating wind or fixed wind option and considering different installation scenarios (support vessels, number of seasons). We also assessed the required time frames and reviewed the ports and harbours suitable for construction, storage and installation of the wind farm components.
We recently worked in partnership with Sarens for the development of a novel offshore installation deck for offshore wind farm installation in shallow water locations such as onshore lakes, where using a typical jack-up vessel is impossible due to their deep draft. Sarens proposed the concept using their vessels and equipment and combining them into an operation deck fit for installation. We modelled the hydrodynamic analysis for the environmental loading on the vessel, to confirm its strength, assess the motions and confirmed whether the installation of the monopile and towers was feasible within the motion limitations for the rotor and the crane strength requirements.
Our team will be at this year’s Global Offshore Wind Conference in Manchester, on the 22-23rd of June 2022, where we will be presenting the Fryslan project with Sarens in the Partnership Hub. Whether you are at the early definition stage of your project, or ready to start construction and installation in the coming months, we will be happy to discuss with you and find a tailored solution for your problem.
